The club’s origin traces to Málaga Football Club, founded on 3 April 1904. It then went through repeated mergers with other clubs in the city — FC Malagueño, Real Málaga FC — to form Club Deportivo Malacitano, under which name it first played in the Spanish second division.
After the Rosaleda stadium opened in 1941 it became Club Deportivo Málaga. Serious financial trouble later forced another refoundation. That succession of names is why older shirts are hard to attribute to a single continuous entity.
