Chilavert kept goal for Sportivo Luqueño, Guaraní and San Lorenzo in South America, then Real Zaragoza from 1988 to 1991, then Vélez Sarsfield from 1991 to 2000, which was by far his longest spell at 266 league appearances. He finished with Strasbourg, Peñarol and a brief return to Vélez. He won 74 caps for Paraguay between 1989 and 2003.
