Steven Gerrard

Liverpool first, England second

Steven Gerrard was born in Merseyside on 30 May 1980 and played for Liverpool from 1998 to 2015, winning nine trophies including the 2005 Champions League, two FA Cups and three League Cups. He never won the Premier League. He then spent two years at LA Galaxy before retiring in 2016. This is one of the larger player listings on the site, and it splits the way his career did: Liverpool items make up around three-quarters of it, England shirts most of the remainder, with a couple of LA Galaxy pieces at the end.

The number dates the shirt

Gerrard’s squad number changed as he rose through the Liverpool side, and the listings record it. His earliest shirts here, from 1998-2000, carry 28; the 2002-04 shirts carry 17; from then on it is 8. England shirts carry 4. That makes the back of the shirt a faster way to place a Liverpool item than the season code on the front. He won 114 caps between 2000 and 2014, captained England 38 times and scored 21 goals, playing at three European Championships and three World Cups.

What the selection looks like

Away shirts outnumber home shirts here, and there is a solid run of third shirts as well as a dozen player-issue items. Champions League versions with the competition’s sleeve badges form their own small group. Most of the listing dates from the 2000s, with the 2010s next and only a handful from the 1990s. Condition skews towards the middle of the ten-point scale rather than the top, and prices run from the low tens to around four hundred pounds.
