1. FC Köln was formed in 1948 by the merger of Kölner BC 01 and SpVgg Sülz 07, was a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963 and won the inaugural title in 1964. The club holds three national championships and four DFB-Pokal wins, including the double of 1978, and plays at the RheinEnergieStadion.
