Stripes from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light
The move from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light in 1997 splits Sunderland’s kit history in two, and the collection covers both sides of it. Umbro and adidas made many of the classic striped shirts, with Nike and others following. The stripes stay, but the width, collar and sponsor change from season to season, which is what makes dating a Sunderland shirt fun.
Players on the back
Dwight Yorke is the most common print, followed by Claudio Reyna and Niall Quinn, whose partnership with Kevin Phillips defined the club’s late-1990s revival. Aiden McGeady, Jozy Altidore and Jermain Defoe also turn up.
Away colours and keeper kits
There are about as many away shirts as home shirts in the collection, so it is a good club for collectors who like the change kits. Goalkeeper shirts and training tops round it off.
Condition and sizing
Shirts are graded from well-worn to brand new with tags and listed with their size. Older Umbro and adidas shirts often fit more generously than modern ones.
