The club’s early years were spent in the local amateur leagues, and it wasn’t until the late 20th century that Hoffenheim began its rise through the German football league system. In 2000, the financial backing of German software business tycoon, Dietmar Hopp, propelled the club into the higher divisions of German football. Hopp, a co-founder of software powerhouse SAP, had once played for Hoffenheim’s youth team, and his investments proved instrumental in the club’s rapid ascent.
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim’s journey would see them achieve promotion to Germany’s top-tier football league, the Bundesliga, in 2008, just eight years after Hopp’s financial assistance began.
